I am going fishing in a river off the Chesapeake Bay and I was wondering in what type of spot would I have the best chances? Should I be in deeper water or near the shore? and what time of day is best and what bait should I use? Please help a beginner!
we dont really know what were fishing for, we're just going to go out on our boat and hope for the best

It depends on what you're fishing for. A beginner, would probably be aiming for smaller fish.

Perch, can be caught near docks, in somewhat deep water. (~30 feet).
They like dark and covered areas. They like shiny, spinning baits, or worms.

Striped Bass, and Rockfish like areas deep into the water, further out. You'll need to cast far. They like baits that are of any meat (Fish, shellfish, worms, etc.)

Flounder and Sole can be caught in shallow to somewhat deep areas (10-30 feet) where there is a muddy bottom. They especially like shellfish or their favorite, sand shrimp. The latter can be dug up on rocky beaches at low tide.

If you just simply cast and fish from any dock that's far out in the water, you'll have the highest chance of catching anything.

Good Luck!
