How can i dye my hair blonde without bleaching?

i heard that bleaching really ruins your hair! and i don't wanna ruin it at all, so how can i do it? i have black hair right now and i was planning on dying it blonde, then dark brown then the real color i want, which is purple. i just dyed my hair ( when it was black) and only my roots came out purple because my tips are black...is there any way i can get the purple i want?!
