How can i convince my parents to let me get a cellphone?

I am 14 and in 2 months will be in high school. I want to get a cell phone and i am willing to pay for half the bill ($12.50) and the cost of the actual phone($50) but they still won't let me. They think i will use it in class and be on it all the time. I really need help on how to convince them. I have already said it will make me feel safer.

PLEASE HELP!!!!!
 
You can start by proving how responsible you can be, do chores around the house, help out with things that you don't need to do. Get good grades in school, mention to them how they can buy you a phone and they will always be in touch with you in case of an emergency or for whatever reason, if they won't let you because of school, then maybe you can tell them you'll keep the phone at home and only use it after school, after all you're not supposed to bring cell phones to school, they are too distracting. Tell them that now that you are in high school you feel like you are taking on more responsibilities and having a cell phone would help with the communication between you and your parents.
 
i got the phone for xmas and i pay for the bill by myself and im 12 ive hade it since i was 10 (pre paid)
 
Tell that to put some sort of parental controls on it that won't allow you to text all the time. AT&T has a service called Smart Limits that can do this.
 
Tell them you want it for protection reasons. Say when your in high school you'll need to be able to call them if you need a ride, or if your at the mall you'll need to let them know when your in trouble. Say it will benefit every body in the end for multiple reasons =) hope this helps.
