How can I convince my father-in-law to stay in FL for Christmas?

We had a terrible Thanksgiving. It was very traumatic. My father-in-law (FIL) was awful, picking fights with anyone who was in his way, when I say terrible, I mean that my 15 y.o. nephew actually punched him, my husband got mad and yelled at him, outside in the front yard in front of quite an audience of his sisters' neighbors, also threatening my FIL. The family doesn't have any patience left for him. If he comes, and he is planning to, he will take the train back, which will be such a sacrifice on his part, "I come all the way here for 2 days on a train and it's freezing, and you don't appreciate me." He received the punch from his grandchild who is adopted and has not been accepted by the FIL because he is from Cambodia. Yes, racist. Any ideas?

Thanks, I'm desperate!

If you want him to stay with you for Christmas ask him to do it for you and talk to him and your family separate saying to just treat each other cor-gal, and act like they are strangers and just not really say anything to each other unless its nice.

Thanksgiving was three weeks ago. Why are you now trying to deal with this when Christmas is next week? I think you should have sat down with him before he left last time and made it clear his behavior was completely unacceptable. Now you have to do the same thing from a distance.

You tell him his behavior was totally unacceptable and if he has any plans for a repeat performance, don't bother coming. If he starts any garbage, you drive him to the train station.
