How can I boot from a flash drive?

I got a headache reading about that.. But now I have a free partiron beside my winows vista system and wanna install XP. I have a cd and need to put it on a flash drive and boot from it on my laptop. Can u tell me how to make flash drive bootable and install from it?
 
yea dont boot windows off a lfash drive it will die in a month or two, but if you really want to go to pendrivelinux.com and check it out, its a bit to write so ill just refer ya.
