How can I boost the microphone volume when I'm recording?

I'm recording my guitar and bass into my MacBook Pro and the microphone volume is very low. I have tried different mic positions but it remains very quiet. I want to boost the signal / increase the volume up to a clearly audible level. Also is there a way of doing this without clipping and distorting the signal?

• I am using a PG57 and SM58
• I have an XLR to USB cable
• I currently have Audacity and Garageband, which I use on Mac OS X 10.5
•*I have a range of guitar FX pedals but I think they will distort the signal?

I am on a low budget and don't want to spend more than £100 unless I really need to.
Thanks for reading.
