Perhaps you should talk to your teacher. I took ap chemistry in high school and am currently majoring in chem in college. I find that even in college I rarely read the book. I learn chemistry best from other people's explanations with a nice visual aid sometimes being found in a book.
Asking your teacher outside of class or in class or trying to get a friend who understands the material are probably your best bets. Or ask me.
