How can I become a better reader and more educated?

I want to be able to go to college. I'll be graduating from school next year. What can I do to improve my reading and become more educated. My dad's side of the family has always told me that I'm stupid and that i will never be able to go to college. None of them went to college and I want to prove them wrong. I want to prove to them that I'll be able to succeed in college. Any advice on how I can do it?
