...poetry? First off, I lack inspiration. I wrote one poem just this afternoon due to the death of a classmate, which really impacted me. So I tried to express myself in the form of poetry, hoping that would be an effective outlet. But this is the first time I have ever been inspired to write poetry. Nothing else has ever been profound or influential enough in my life to spark my creative side.
I know my poem was inconsistent - It didn't follow a specific poetic pattern.. and it didn't have much rhythm either. Like I said, I don't know much about poetry. But I looked at my finished work and I was pretty satisfied by it. I asked for feedback from others, and the comments were all sort of negative. They said it was too simple, there weren't enough metaphors, it wasn't abstract enough, it was more like a journal entry than a poem..
So I guess my question is really two questions. If I want to grow as a poet, do I need to familiarize myself with the rules first, and also study famous poets such as Emily Dickinson, Edgar Allan Poe, etc..?
And, how do I find inspiration to write?
Well some would argue that in poetry, you are able to do whatever you want because it's how you express yourself, and rules are irrelevant. Someone actually said that to me in a comment.
