How can I activate the LG Dare I'm buying from my friend without going into a...

...verizon store? Right now i'm using an old razr and i am going to buy an lg dare from my friend tomorrow. he said something like i can call *228 and it can activate it, someone please explain this? and you don't have to have like internet for it, do you? i have unlimited texting so i don't know what they mean by a data plan, and if i even need one.
 
i went online to verizon.com and went to the phone i had and on the left ide it says activate phone and all you have to do is put in an ESN number and your done.
 
you can call the 1-800 number for Verizon on a land linee phone and tell them that is what you want to do , they will go through the steps with you to make sure its working properly... Hope this helped :)
