How can a movie be a blockbuster hit with low movie ratings and why would the writer of that movie be proud ?

The movie New Year's Eve has low ratings but it's a blockbuster hit with the same screenwriter who wrote Valentine's Day which also was a blockbuster hit & had low ratings. How can that be? And what disgust me the most is that she's proud of that movie with it's low rating and hard critics! I'll never take her seriously. Your opinion? Thanks ahead if time!
