How big of an engine can I put in my 2001 Pontiac Firebird that currently has

You can put in whatever engine you want but it's going to take some serious modifications, money, and time. I believe the LS1 motor would be the biggest "bolt in" motor you can throw in there. but unless you already have one and are going to do the work yourself, you'd be better off selling your V6 car and buying a V8 car. there are plenty of websites out there for your car though. do a little reading and figure out what way is the best way for you.

Sell it, and buy one with the engine in it that you want.

Seriously, sit down and do the math.

Lets say you get an LS1 engine, at the low low price of around 5,000-6000. Then you figure installation costs, which will be another 2-3,0000.

So, you're at $7000, for a stock LS1 engine, when you could buy a 2000 Trans Am, with that engine, for around 7,000 to start with. And not have to worry that it was installed properly.

Physically - with a LOT of money and a lot of work you can shoehorn a small block V-8 in there. It will require an entire donor vehicle - A Pontiac, Buick or Oldsmobile will serve. the reason for the entire donor vehicle is because you will need all of the wiring and engine controls.

If you intend to register the vehicle in a Tailpipe Test state the donor vehicle must be the same year or newer to meet the tail pipe emission requirements.

You will get far more bang for your buck by rebuilding the existing engine using performance components.
