How bad is the music industry?

Well this thread has turned into a bit of a joke BUT...

I don't think the music industry is as much about "screwing people over" as made out in the opening post. It all comes down to whether or not the signees are still worth anything to the company. If they are, they're not going to be "screwed over". So it's down to the artists being anything worth promoting.

you do get to read contracts before you sign them, and have them inspected by a lawyer.

I don't think music should be seen as an industry. It should be seen as an art that is outside the realm of commercialism.

It Canada it's not so bad. I'm from a mid-sized town, and we have a pretty big music scene. A lot of the local banRAB are touring and one in particular is on MuchMusic regularly, and has been travelling the world.
