Plants are capable of producing the complex nutrients needed by them and other living things using small basic molecules and ions as starting materials for example, carbon dioxide, water, nitrites, iron, magnesium, phosphate etc
With these and the energy from sunlight they produce sugar and then amino acids, fats and vitamins which heterotrophs like animals can't produce. They are entirely reliant on plants for producing them.
Therefore without plants they wouldn't exist as they would have no food source.
