How are gun effects made in movies? like blank firing or muzzle flashes or whatever?

Hollywood is loaded with smokes and mirrors... and almost all action/drama/crime movies have gunfire in them. So how to they make the gun effects in the movies, and if possible please give different methods for different types (like pistols or automatics). I've heard of blank firing rounds and artificial muzzle flashes, if there are other methods let me know.

here are some examples when i mean different types of gunfire

Scarface Ending Scene w/ M16- (insert effects here)
Rambo Ending Gunfight w/ turret shooting- (insert effects here)
