How are comets dangerous?

I'm doing a brochure on Mercury(the planet) for Science and on one of our pages we have to put a list of things we may encounter in space, so I used comets, stars, aestroids and meteroids. So, I have to write if dangerous describe how and precautions that will be taken to avoid collision.

A comet can strike the earth and cause an explosion that can kill people. The damage can range up to extinction of all people, depending on the size of the comet.

Comets are only dangerous if they are on a collision course and they are too large to burn up in the atmosphere.
