how and when do i notify my back up college im not going there?

i applied to two colleges, and i got in the one i wanted to go to, but i dont know when im suppposed to tell the other college im not going. my mum said its when we get the GCSE results. is this right? will they send something for confirmation, or will i have to do it?they keep sending me stuff i dont need or want! any details would be appreciated
