when none have ever occured ...? ... in my lifetime? They interupt TV programming (often at inopportune times) So far, they have done more harm than good.
I can tell when weather conditions are precarious by what's happening outside. No way can a catastrophe sneak up on me.
The point is, it's sucha loosely guarded precaution that I'm sure others like my self no longer take these warnings seriously. How many times can we hear the cry, "Wolf" before it has no meaning?
smiley face less than 3- I don't understand why you can't see the question.
dArl- You are missing the pt. We hear these precautions far too often to take them seriously.

I was in the basement not too long ago due to a warning. We get them often -- not all the time though. The area southeast of us gets almost daily watches. However, during the last warning it was so black outside that we decided it was time to take this one seriously. It was 2:15 p.m., and it was as dark as it is at midnight. Very scary.

And, we have 3 dogs. Two get nervous when a storm is approaching and the other one is oblivious -- we joke that she is not the "sharpest" dog in the world! However, she got nervous during this last storm too. She had a lot to do with our decision to retreat to the basement -- which by the way is actually more of a storage area, not very big, my husband, myself, and the 3 dogs were squeezed in there! All of us shaking by the way!

But, I do agree with you. We do seem to get these warnings often and nothing ever happens and you do tend to ignore them. We have been in our house since 1981 and have had at least 3 or 4 tornado warnings (not watches) every year and this year was the first year we ever went to the basement for cover -- mainly due to "Pumpkin-The-Wonder-Dog"!

Regardless of how often you hear them, you should take them seriously. They're there for a reason--to keep you safe. Granted, I live in western Kansas, and there are watches and warnings often. I tend to take them with a grain of salt, but I still pay attention to where they are and where they're going because you never know when it's actually going to hit you for real. For instance, since January alone, my county has been under at least 30 tornado warnings (meaning rotation has been spotted within storms), but Monday night for the first time in the year that I've lived in that town, they actually ran the sirens because there was one headed our way. It would have been easy for me to say, "It's not going to happen" and just go on with my normal life, but I'm glad I took it seriously anyway.

I know what your saying. You would think with today's technology they would be able to predict more precisely what the weather is going to be. Where I live it's mostly wrong. These weather predictors get paid good money and for what? I have lived in tornado alley for 20 yrs. And they have never been right. You can tell by the weather that you are experiencing to determine for yourself when to take cover. The reason why people are unprepared for a tornado, is because the weather channel was wrong. Here the people taking cover don't get the tornado and the ones that thought they were in the clear (according to the weather channel) end up getting hit. I do agree with you totally!!!!!!

you should always take severe weather seriously, because no matter what its for your own good. I can say a lot of people agree with you and equal or less disagree. The Alerts They Provide help you in case severe weather strikes Just In Case! So If you have a basement and severe weather is on the way just put in a movie to make the time go by and every half an hour just check the forecast because if you aren't in a safe place you can be harmed so please do take it seriously!
