How accepting is the University of Texas at Austin with other cultures?

I absolutely love the University of Texas and I am thinking of applying there. I am from Massachusetts and have heard that Texas isn't known for accepting African Americans. I am Bi-Racial and grew up in an all white household and all of my friends are white, my mom is kind of nervous about sending me to a school where there is a lot of racial tension. I told her that there is a lot of southern hospitality, is this true or is there a lot of racial tension at the school.
