House small Pox episode problem?

Okay so the episode of House where the guy ends up having Rickettsial Pox instead of Small Pox - I was wondering HOW he dies in the first place since Rickettsial Pox is considered mild and hasn't had any recorded fatalities.

So how does this guy die? It's not even considered all that similar to small pox but more like chicken pox.
I assume they put it down to the return of the guy's kidney cancer causing immuno-compromisation, but somehow this doesn't make sense.

Also, how did he catch it from the girl when Rickettsial pox isn't airborne, but through bites or exposure to the blood - unless he touched the broken glass or the girl which we don't see.
Brad: yes, that's what they thought, but the Dad ended up having Rickettsialpox, not Small Pox. He couldnt have died of small pox and then had the eschars associated with Rpox at the same time. That doesn't make sense.
Once again, House says 'we gave it to him' about the Small Pox BEFORE he decides it must be the kidney cancer instead, so he says NO it's not small pox - why he walks into the room with no protective gear!

so it could not have been small pox at all. and he couldnt have died of small pox when he only had Rpox
