HotSync Problem

The desktop software (on my PC) will not accept the deletion of calendar events that have been deleted from the T3 calendar, when the T3 and PC are hotsync'd. The result of the hotsync operation is that the desktop software will restore the event that had been deleted from the T3, back onto the T3. This all happens when the calendar conduit is set to "Synchronize files". If the conduit is set to "Handheld overwrites desktop", then the deletion proceeds normally.

If the calendar event is deleted from desktop, then the hotsync will delete the same item from the T3, when the calendar conduit is to "Synchronize files". My point is that this should work exactly the same in either direction when the calendar conduit is set to "Synchronize files", but it doesn't.

What am I doing wrong? Many thanks to anyone who can help.

That's a new one....

Double check the date and time zone settings on both devices. It sounds as if the PC might be a day or two early (PC thinks it's Aug 4th or off by 12 hours?) compared to the T3 or possibly vice versa?


Then assuming that the above isn't the issue then I'd go through the proverbial tests of soft reset and then a hard reset to purge an errant handheld file.....or try deleting the two calendar data files on the handheld and then have the desktop overwrite the handheld on the next sync and see if it cleared some errant data string that might be the cause.

All of this is predicated on the fact that your using only the default apps with regards to calendar.

Actually, I did neglect to mention one important fact -- shame on me. On the handheld I use DateBook5 (i.e., DateBk5).

Ok,

CESD the developer of Datebk5 doesn't use his own forum for "airing" issues. This may be one for the yahoo forums which you can find down the page on this page.

I'd review the settings within Datebk5 because as I recall while playing with it there is some special settings for the T3. Also, make certain that you have the latest verision S7 which is on this page towards the right hand side upper quandrant.

The released version that your using may not be compatible with the T3 especially if you haven't bumped it to this S7 version.

If you've got the latest....sounds like a you might want to file a request with tech support at Pimlico.
 
AFter getting frustrated with AGendus I downloaded a TON of other datebook apps including Datebk5. My Tasks and/or Calendar Database became corrupt. This can happen in two ways:

1. It just does!
2. Agendus was not deleting recurring events properly.

Pimlico offer a freeware database scanner which I used and found two bad records. However then I started getting a message upon scanning that said something like "null handle event, common with 3rd party applications."

I "went drastic" and just DELETED the database from the T3 and then DELETED the .dat files on the PC and set desktop to handheld overwrites. That zeroed everything out and I reloaded the information (but not as many recurring events such as birthdays, regular monthly appointments, etc) til I ran dbScan.

My theory is that one of the downloaded trials "appended" the notefield information Agendus/ActNames uses for icon ID; I also was "comingling" icons between Datebk5 and AGendus as Mooseman has discussed. Not good.

Try this attached software and see if it clears any "screwy records;" if not I'd delete the whole thing and re-enter information but that's me - someone here might have a "not so drastic fix."
 
Special thanks to both Moose Man and PalmTealLover for taking the time to help with my hotsync (deletion) problem. I've pretty much run through all the suggestions, including installing the the latest S7 version, along with running the latest version of dbScan (no errors found).

I did send an email to "[email protected]" describing the problem, 24 hours ago. No answer yet. Right now I'm betting that buried somewhere in all the DateBk5 options and preferences there is a checkbox I've missed.

I feel that the problem is not a random error in some file since my wife has the same set-up on her PC (separate from mine), and she has the same problem with her T3/DateBk5 combination.

I had a similar problem in the aftermath of using DualDate. As it turned out I had to play with the conduits for both Calendar and/or Date Book to finally get it to make the proper changes. Date Book is now set to ?do nothing? and Calendar is set to ?sychronize the files?. I truly think that the playing with both of them and finally arriving at the solution was more relevant to solving the problem than the final answer itself was. But it does now work. Try that, it cant hurt anything and did work for me.

Please help me fully understand what you are saying. Right now my Calendar conduit is set to "Synchronize the files", and my Date book conduit is set to "Do nothing". With these settings I get the error whereby an event deleted from the T3 will not be deleted from the Palm Desktop, and the Desktop reinstalls the event onto the T3. Right now, the only way to avoid this is to temporarily set the Calendar conduit to "Handheld overwrites desktop". I don't think it should be necessary to do that.

I think you said you ended up with the conduit configuration of Calendar set to "Synchronize the files", and Date book set to "Do nothing". (Palm recommends this configuration.) And this configuration cured your similar problem? Or, was it the process of getting there that cured your problem?

Another assumption that might help, are you syncing to Outlook or the Palm Desktop?

If the PalmDesktop then the conduit Datebook should be set to "sync" and the conduit Calendar should be set to do nothing. The reverse is true if your syncing to Outlook.

That said.....it still doesn't make sense to me that the desktop would not respond correctly because then the conduit wouldn't be functioning at all....based upon the wrong conduit.

The only other thing might be to check under the hotsync preferences on the handheld to make certain that the datebook / calendar is checked to sync along with all of the other files.

A very radical idea that I don't recommend until last resort:

1. Hard Reset the device - after a good sync is known.
2. Delete the Saved_Preferences.prc file. This would delete any settings on the device or software that might be causing the issue. It would also cause you to have to re-enter most of your passwords or registrations for any add on software after you hotsync.
3. The data should be restored without a glitch and even if it weren't (which I doubt) you could recover it from the various backups that are on the desktop PC.

Radical and only recommended if your comfortable doing it but I pretty much do a hard reset once a month and restore all the time without a glitch because of beta testing various software etc.

But I'd really look into that conduit settings.

Perhaps as I think, are you trying to sync certain things to the Palm Desktop and other things like address book to Outlook?

If you are....that's dangerous non-recommend ground because the new Palm conduits just don't like that because of registry issues on the PC. I'm not condemning....just thinking out loud trying to help.
 
Monthly Hard Reset?!

Hadn't even THOUGHT of that - that is a true "purge," isn't it?

I suppose restore all "known good apps" from SD Card or PC, check Saved Prefs (before Hard Reset" for any "strange entries," DELETE THEM, then BACK UP, and restore only the "happy happy file" of Saved prefs (entering any subsequently required serial #s) and you've got "clean copies" of everything?

For me, the "safe apps" are already in JackFlash and brought back after Hard Reset by JackSafe; there aren't that many "possibles" in RAM to worry about - so Saved Prefs would be most likely culprit along with A68 shadow files (both of which I monitor). That's why I monitor Saved prefs manually and don't trust "removal programs;" nothing like actually seeing what you've got. Filez will put a list of Saved prefs in Memo which you can then annotate and become familiar with in terms of "what should belong;" makes it easier to spot any errant entries. However - a monthly hard reset would take out ALL the guesswork and eliminate ANTHING you'd missed.
