Hot rumor: The Nokia N8 with Symbian^3

So if they called it S60v6 instead, you'd be more interested?

Symbian^3 has some more eye candy than older S60 versions and Nokia's new hardware will have enough horsepower to drive it properly.

The key question remains: will Nokia ignore its QA teams and focus groups when shipping the software for their big Symbian^3 phone? I'm thinking back to the 6630, N73, N95, N96, and N97.
 
1) One of the pics seems to show it has nothing to do with the battery (likely just prototype screws). Btw, do you actually swap batteries? I never ever have so far.
2) Hopefully just a proto issue.
3) Hmm.. I'd still rather it protrudes a bit than having it 18mm thick and have to listen the *****ing about how thick it is (note: i.e. the thickness per se would not bother me) :D
 
So - it's nothing new on the outside, wont be nothing new on the outside till S^4 comes along - why should ANYONE buy a phone with S^3 knowing it's going to be obsolete in a year's time? (Maemo--->Meego).
 
The N900 was the statistical outlier. For quite awhile now, there's been a 6-9 month lead time from announcement to launch.

And since the N95-3? Available RAM after boot has only shrunken in size. My N95-3 after boot ~80mb's free. My E71 after boot ~61mb's free. My N86 after boot ~46mb's free. My E72 after boot ~40mb's free. :doh:
 
Maybe i am wrong but QT is a HUGE difference. Let me try to explain what i said. A lot of apps can be built with QT and can be easily compiled on Symbian^3 as well as other platforms. So maybe Google Earth, VLC Media Player and a better implementation of Ovi maps will be coming with Symbian^3 because the hardware is better and QT is built in. These improved apps can also be used with MeeGo and Symbian^4 and beyond. But all the old apps you might have...they can only be used with Symbian^3. I think of it as comparable to the desktop world and Windows. When you upgrade you get better and faster hardware...but the occasional old App that worked so well was not re-written for the new OS so if you don't have the old OS you can't use it. And i can see some Apps I have now being like that. That is why I like Symbian^3 even if Symbian^4 will be newer, better, faster.
 
i just wanted to say.

Nokia Fail! everyone is running around with 1ghz A8s with 512mb ram.
good old nokia almost still swears by their arm 11 434mhz on 128mb ram.

n8 not running OMAP3?....that would really surprise. if its arm11....... OMG nokia you FAIL so bad.

It might be the 1st Symbian^3 Device, but it is still a Symbian^1 sort of like a Featured Pack update.
 
maybe someone can explain to me, but those comments had people saying it was a ripoff of the iphone OS. i dont see it being even close to looking like the iphone. what am i missing?
 
They are attending but don't have a stand/booth there. Meetings with partners on site and announcements of site.

As for the strategy - Nokia is competing in all regions (Japan and perhaps Korea being the only expections) and segments of the market. Would be curious to see where they have ever stated less focus on Europe and North America? They are by no means abandoning the high end, and as far as the high end of smartphones goes (there are other smaller high end segments for its a new S series is rumored too in that same French story), Maemo is their main OS for that. SF^4 should also be able to compete in the higher end segments if not quite at the very top.

Finally, while you are probably right that there will be some mergers/take overs (wonder if anyone wants to buy of SE or Palm? not sure why anyone would really want to though). I would be willing to bet my dirty socks again that Nokia will never (well, let's say in the foreseeable future and scenarios) try to acquire or merge with RIM. :)
 
That's fantastic, but you may need to clue them in that, to expand in the North American market, they're going to have to improve their post sales support.

Buying an expensive, unlocked device and then only being able to deal with Nokia via an obscure company in the Mid West, is not ideal.

Maybe they can partner with Best Buy, the big-box electronics retailer (there's one in nearly every major town in the U.S.) to handle repair services, etc.
 
My feeling/guess is that the battery cannot be removed on this. The pic that to me seems to have the bottom off appears to have the chipset board sticking out (can't see anything that looked like battery in the pic). Unless the battery is very very thin and that little gap on top of the green part is the battery slot.
 
Partly because of added software and OS features I guess? Obviously they should add more RAM, not saying they shouldn't.

There have been many models where the lead time was much shorter. But for the top models it has been longer many times. At the N900 launch they said they are likely to use that approach (i.e. announcement close to release) more, but not exclusively.

Anyway, this model sounds very promising. As its going to be Omap3 or similar, it should be snappy etc. an if the cam is class leading, it should do great.
 
What crap .. my N86 does have 65 mb ram after fresh boot on ver 21 firmware and its rock solid even with heavy multitasking, yet to find any bug with it... This N8 will be a gem of device hardware wise. 12mp cam with both xenon and dual led flash with omap 3440 or higher for hd video capture..hell this thing even has hdmi port. Now what competition has pls show me? It will be based on Symbian^3 so hopefully it will be pretty good on software front too..I would have been very very glad if nokia could have straight gone to omap 4 instead..
