Hot rumor: The Nokia N8 with Symbian^3

Stracenska, the -00 bit is just the regional/carrier version number, and the actual model number is N8.

Regarding the announcement of devices, Nokia may have decided to announce them after MWC to get better media coverage. Announcing at MWC risks being lost in all the other announcements.

I'm pretty sure "hardened" doesn't mean stable...Nokia can't afford to not ship phones with bugs. The people on this forum pay $800-1000 for them regardless.

I know it's going to be N97 levels of bugginess when it comes out-this is the first symbian^3 phone, after all. Hopefully it's out and has a firmware update by the time I come home from my trip this summer.

Cpu is not crappy neither is ram, its double the n97, its iphone 3gs ram and faster cpu from the specs, now we have to see if the software is optimized with the hardware.
The n97 needed this ram and processor, it would have been great then. :buddies:

A person I talked to that actually got to play with the phone said it's sealed. Are you saying it's bottom loading because that's what engadget said?

I feel like with all the pics we got, if it was truly bottom loading they wouldve taken a picture indicating that, and I see absolutely nothing.

T-Mobile getting the N900 was probably due to T-Mobile's:

1- relationship to Deutsche Telekom;
2- presence in international markets (not just U.S.)

I begged and bugged my friend to offer it to ATT bands, but I was told that it would require significant RF work and testing.

I know it does not look that way, but you'll have to trust me when I say that Nokia really wants to grow the NAM market and they haven't given up yet. Just sometimes, the carrier and manufacturer, do not see eye to eye.

Do we know where that actually came from? It would be hilarious if someone just cobbled that together for fun using old nokia press releases for their layouts..

Well, okay, that's much better. Now get those bands in a nice, stylish Meego phone, and I'll buy, Nokia. Given that Joikuspot works with Maemo/Meego now, there's really no reason to stick with Symbian any more.

That's been my problem with the IT range for years now.

It's never been ready for the mass market. It's like everytime it gets close, Nokia hits the reset button and sends the platform in a different direction. It's like riding a software version of those scrambler rides at the amusement park... it just keeps spinning and changing directions.

I mean, in the 5 years it's been out, there have been 3 complete breaks in API/binaries. And I'm sure Meego will bring yet another. It's like by the time developers really come to grips with the platform and how to really optimize software for it and take advantage of it, Nokia pulls the rug out from under them.

Thank you.
Yeah, I've been everywhere lol. However, the N900 is as close as to "high-end" to what Nokia can go. Pretty much, Nokia doesn't seem to want "high-end", and/or either finish what they started. The only reason why I didn't get the N900 was the size. Although, I am hearing that the next Maemo/MeeGo device will be half the size of the N900, so that's a great sign. Well, consumers are not the best developers out there, that is clearly visible, so we can't expect them to do what a high paid programmer could do.

Out of memory is something that Nokia has given since their first smartphone lol, I remember that one (out of a thousand) warning.

Well, like I said, the only company that knows how to optimize the software with hardware, and vice versa, is Apple. I'm not a fanboy by all means (I have an iMac running Windows 7, a Nokia N95 8GB, a Zune (first gen, bulky white one) =]), but I make the hardware work the way I want lol, however that's me being tech savy.
However, it should be interesting now since Nokia isn't the main developer for the new SF, so their new hardware should be "great" since they "gave it/them" all their focus.

The N900 could've been the best "smartphone" from Nokia, and also the best overall. It could've sold millions (since they do have that market share XD, that makes me laugh still,... so profits should have been great with all those "loyal" customers, no?), but the entire device was a mess/unfinished.

Good thing that Nokia isn't the only smartphone company, or else we would've still been using a keypad XD bahahaha.

Leaks can cause multiple problems. I'm sure some people could have leaked info about the iPad but they didn't. They waited until the official announcement to give an in depth review. He chose not to do that and has to live with the consequences. I truly think he has an axe to grind and I've read some of his view of free Ovi Maps and see that even when Nokia decides to give something away he can't appreciate it or be impartial.

Yeah, all the tech sites including CNET have said that Nokia isn't announcing anything at Mobile World Congress; in fact, they're not even attending. There was a news article that the company's main new focus is less with Europe and North America and more focused on developing world markets.

That's a legitimate strategy, I guess, since RIM, Apple, HTC and very soon Microsoft with their Zune phone will be competing in the high end. But LG and Samsung is going to battle Nokia in the low end emerging market phone area until they're all bloody.

I predict that in the next few years, there will be a few big mergers between mobile manufacturers or outright acquisition/takeovers. Nokia is a big company with tons of cash, but they may need to merge with or buy another firm with solid high end devices. RIM, anyone?

Bad news (well, not really since you guys already know). The June release date that I heard about last month for Vasco slipped by a month to July, so that does fall in line w/ the September release date announcement. :(

I did confirm that the pics (with the screws) is Vasco, although it looked a little different from the device I played with, Sushi. I got a more accurate thickness rather than comparing against the N97 -- they will be about 10mm thin and Sushi's backside is rounded/curved/whatever while Vasco's is flatter. They will have dedicated GPU and 12mp/Xenon is confirmed for Vasco.

No news on the green phone, Takai. No news on the E7-00, unfortunately.

I did hear some other interesting bits. Nokia is headed out of ARM processors and towards multi-core processors. Also, and this may be obvious, Nokia has a long-term roadmap for their hardware, so what they plan right now, will show up 3-4 years from now (i.e. the N97 hardware was planned/developed 3-4 years ago). The challenge, which is not as obvious, is making sure what is planned right now hits the target 3-4 years from now. So... Vasco/Sushi probably will not have a Snapdragon proc, I believe I heard ARM 11...???

Catch my other comment in the RX-99 thread (that's all I should probably say).

EDIT: I see ARM11 is a processor family... I wonder if it's ARM11 MPCore...

Going off specs alone it should be a stable device. Most of the complaints with Nokia's current lineup is due to lack of avail ram and processor speed which has been greatly improved on this device. Ram is on board with that of the Moto Droid (milestone) as is processor and Rom. I should finally be able to launch Engadgetmobile.com on the phone without it running out of Ram and closing. 12mp cam and video quality is a plus as well. Going off specs alone I can see myself buying this phone.

Also while I like simple designs, wouldn't mind carrying it, does anyone else feel that this is one of the blandest designs Nokia has put out to date?

Considering that this is going to be their flagship device to the public...
