Hot Flashes

I have started to go through hot flashes for about 6-8 months now. Usually when they do come on, I fan myself and it goes away fairly quick. I am usually burning up! my face and arms are red, and body feels like its on fire as well as sweating.

I would like to know if I just need to realize that this is a life long thing or is there hope in the future that this will go away?

I guess I want to stay prepared for the duration. Whats your thoughts? I am 48 right now.

TwinswithCF: There's a product out there called Amberen that some people have used for hot flashes. Look on the menopause board and the women's health board for more information about the Amberen and others comments that might be helpful.

I'm 50 and have been going through hot flashes and night sweats for about 18 months now. I was on HRT for six weeks, but weaned myself off once I read that women who began HRT and had breast pain were far more likely to develop an aggressive form of breast cancer. Since then I have been really miserable. Hot flashes hourly, night sweats and the lack of sleep that follows..you get the picture.
I checked with my internist, my endocrinologist (I take Synthroid for Hashimoto's)
and my cardiologist (I have heart arrythmia) and they all agreed that it would be fine for me to use black cohosh. I found one that also has soy in it. Within a handful of days
I am feeling almost 100% better. It is nothing less than a miracle for me, considering
how very uncomfortable I was. I am told to only stay on them for six months (this is my own research, not my doctors' advice) and I am comfortable and SO happy.
Wishing you the same!!!
Sue

Thanks everyone. I also take synthroid and perhaps I will check into the black cohosh. I'm not a big medication taker but I might just give this a try. You get this at a health food store?
