Horse turns toward me during lounging?

I have a 3 year old Paint gelding that has just started under the saddle. However he needs some work on lounging. He keeps turning towards me. He is just being trained to do it also. We currently have a horse staying in our round pen, so Any tips would help. Thanks!!
I position myself far enough back, i know that for sure. And taking the other horse out of the pen is not an option because it is not mine, so I dont want to mess with it.
like i said, there is no possible way to use the ring. The horse is there to be trained and it is not mine, so I will not move it.
 
Some horses just don't mind the whip very well. What I do to get them a little more motivated is tie a white plastic bag on the whip (you know, like from the grocery store). I'm not really sure why it works but I assume it's more visual for them than just a whip. Although you should also sack him out with it as well so that he's not just running because he is scared of the bag..
 
Nothing in the rules that say you have to use the round pen to lunge your horse....put him on a lunge line and go to it, anywhere...it's not that big of a deal. Just make sure that you position yourself correctly (it sounds like you already know how to do that)
 
well take out the horse in the roundpen. before you lounge yours. when he turns towards your crack the whip near his hindquarters but dont hit him, pull on the lounge to pull his head in the right direction as you do this.
 
Are you sure you have properly positioned yourself when you lunge him? If you are "in front" instead of making him move from behind he's doing what's normal for a well behaved horse-stopping and looking to you for cues. Make sure you are driving him from behind. Some horses I've had have been taught to turn in and face the handler, so he may be doing what he's been taught. If you are the only one who's taught him, I'd recheck your positioning.
 
Be proactive and get behind him (toward his butt) when he turns toward you. He can't turn toward you if you are a.) behind him and b.) driving him forward.
 
ask the owner of the other horse if you can use the lunge ring. BTW, its lunging, not lounging. Anyway, chase him away with the whip. even when you stop, or pause to change direction do not let him turn in. My pony use to be similar, you just have to be consistently firm and chase them away. always lunge with a lunge whip; not to hit them, of course, but for control's sake...

You need to position yourself towards his rear end. You two may do some small circling at first, and interesting movements, but he'll eventually go out, then praise him for that. They don't really get the concept at first and want to come in to the comfort zone. Once he learns that the zone can also be out at the end of the line, he'll get better at it.
 
well you dont always have a round pen to lounge a horse i have had the same problems and how i have broke my horses of that habit is stand about the middle of there body and swing a rope counter clock wise hitting his butt so that he will go around you so he learns its a tight circle but pretty soon you can give him more slack and pretty soon he will learn how to run in a large circle with out stopping or going to youall the time... easier to show then to tell you how to do it until you give him the signal
