There is only one true horror film as far as I am concerned and that is 'The Exorcist.'
My children think it is tame but at the time, it was so totally different from the usual output.

i was the same when i first saw it, it could have had something todo with it being on channel 4 so there were adverts and it made it less scary.

I agree it was of its time, but it followed a diet of Dracula films (done to death), Hammer Horror films (churned out on a regular basis and a few other forgetables.
'Rosemary's Baby' (1968) was a bit different but not really scary.
I was totally unprepared for what I saw one Saturday afternoon in 1973. Knew nothing about it & only went in the cinema get out of the rain.

Candyman (first film only; sequel is dreadful).
Silent Hill (because it's beautiful).
Hellraiser series (up to the 4th film, which is dreadful).
Alien
The Grudge (US version, which I happened to see first).

That'll do. I've never been into most of the classics: Nightmare, Jason, Evil Dead, etc.

I thought that too :) but it's not a favourite for me.

Some in the list can fall under other genres too:

The Omen(original)
Black Christmas
Cat People(original)
The Brood
Session 9
The Descent
Haute Tension, and also the director's Hills Have Eyes remake(far superior to the original)
May
Carrie
Scream
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
The Shining
Suspiria(any other Argento too)
Les Yeux Sans Visage
Evil Dead Trilogy
Les Diaboliques
The Eye
Freaks
28 Days Later

The above are some of my favourites.
