Horrors, which are the best, ones from the 80's or modern ones?

When it comes to the Horror movies of today compared to the 80s or before, are we just being scared by the FX ? and if that is true then are they really superior.

Gore/slasher horror movies may entertain but they seldom shock or scare me.
I am really only scared by a movie that lets me see what might be there and leaves my imagination to fill in the details.
That way my subconcious fears can scare the s*** out of me.

Because of that many movies of the past are still impressive.

The Signalman 1976 is still very creepy http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0075220/

The Haunting 1963 is better than the remake

I get the feeling with current days horrors, the producers look at the effects available and say

"We can do this."

When they should be saying:

"Should we do this?"

The original Texas chainsaw massacre, is WAY creepy!!
Also the Shining and the Omen were very frighteining IMO.
Of modern ones, I found the Saw movies very frightening, and the real Jeffrey Dahmer story was really camped up, but awful.

I love horror films & use to enjoyslasher films like the 1st Friday the 13th, My Bloody Valentine, New Year's Evil, Happy Birthday to Me, April Fool's Day, Prom Night all that sort of stuff as well as enjoying films like The Exorcist, Abominable Dr. Phibes, Black Christmas, Carrie, The Omen & Demon Seed - what I don't like about the current horror scene is that they are re-makes which are poor copies of the originals or torture porn which just don't appeal to me at all

It has to be the 80's mostly for me when it comes to horror. As that was a time when the movies had atmosphere and tension. Nowadays you'd be forgiven for thinking the horror scene was watered down to suit the masses instead of a select type of movie goer [which the horror scene is actually when you think about it]. Even by todays standarRAB a lot of the movies from that era still have what it takes to entertain. They were not made for the sole purpose of getting as many youngsters into the cinema as possible. Back then it was horror movies for horror fans. Today it is horror movies for the masses.

They were directed by Lamberto Bava. Argento only produced them and partially wrote the script alongside Bava. They were good though, both of them. Nice atmosphere and the soundtracks were well done too.
