Horror films with no blood

The spooky season is upon us, and at my end, we're getting into the spirit of things. Planning our pumpkin carving, thinking about spooky snacks and a freaky film-fest.

I've been looking forward to scaring myself silly with a nice atmospheric film like "Dumplings" or "Audition", but it looks like one of our group isn't keen on scary films. It's the blood, gore and gratuitous violence that gets to her.

So, I was wondering if there are any suggestions for a good, plot driven film that will send a chill down your spine (minus bloody bits)? There won't be any children amongst us, so adult themes are ok.

Having said that, I'm not against a good children's spooky film either, I liked Nightmare before Christmas and Coraline.

The Haunting (original 1963 version not the lame remake)

Halloween (original has very little bloodletting)

The Seventh Victim

Cat People & Curse of the Cat People

Blair Witch Project

Neither the Sea nor the Sand

The Wicker Man

Die Monster, Die!

Taste Of Fear - classic Hammer suspense

The Mothman Prophecies - more of a 'dread' film....slow-paced but creepy

The Others - atmospheric and spooky

I'd second The Others - very atmospheric and not a drop of blood as I recall.

I still find The Sixth Sense spooky and a good film even when you know the full story.

If there is a film version of The Woman in Black available I would recommend that too. Very, very atmospheric and creepy.

I watched The Haunting (1963 version) the other week.

It has held up well after all these years and is still quite scary, especially in the scenes with bulging walls and heavy footsteps along the corridors.

If you do not have a copy it can be bought for

Thanks for all the brilliant suggestions.

I agreed with the suggestions for "The Others" and "Sixth Sense", it's nice and spooky without being over the top with gratuitous violence.

Anyway, I ran it past her, and she's seen them already! She liked them though... Also, according to her, "they don't count as Horror films"... I guess it's because they are somewhat like psychological thrillers.

So, with that in mind, I looked through my collection of DVRAB and came up with the film "Identity". I remember liking it, and it has the same "psychological thriller" edge to it, along with a similar plot twist to the previous two films.

I can't remember the exact details of the film, and crucially, I can't remember just how gory it is... I don't really want to read up about it, and re-spoil the film for myself though. Seems like a good solution though.

I've seen the remake of the Haunting, and I can't remember a single thing about it! I will have to check out the original though.

I saw "A tale of two sisters" about two years ago, and yes, I really enjoyed it. I might put that on my backup.

Oh, I also borrowed a copy of "Tetsuo : The iron man" a while ago and still haven't gotten round to seeing it yet. Should I give this a try?

Hmm... I also have "The Orphanage". That's a good substitute for "The Others"... (Need to find it first)

The Orphanage has one scene of a quite graphic after view of an accident, so cover her eyes when that comes up if you know exactly when... :p But yes, The Orphanage is definitely one to see. But really, if she can sit through Identity, then The Orphanage should be fine...

Try The Changeling(1980) too.

That's the thing, I can't remember how bad Identity was... I will see if we can watch both!

Her new husband (my brother) will be there to comfort her for the few horrible bits in these films :P
