hooking stereo speakers to PS3?

I got two huge speakers from an old stereo set up my dad had. so what i did was connected the audio wires from my PS3 to the back of the stereo, but when the volume came out of the speakers it was horrid. it was a huge bass boost and static at the same time. i tried messing with the settings on the setting to fix it.. but nothing happened.

anyone know how to fix this?
 
I did the same thing the same way and had the 'same' results. I corrected that problem by connecting the speakers directly to the tv/ monitor. That ways, whatever came out of the tv also comes through the speakers.
P.S. I could never figure out what it would not work the other way.
