hooked wii up through the vcr and now the vcr isn't taking a vhs tape?

It keeps rejecting it??
TV is old and does not have enough jacks in back to take the Wii cable, so have to use the vcr. The Wii people walked me through the set up and I had the Wii, the Satellite and the VCR working. Now the VCR won't take the tape - I am sure it something really simple that I have done wrong.
