Honda Magna v30 Problem?

I own a rare 1984 honda magna v30. Last year toward the end of the riding season she started acting funny, and now will not start at all. I started it up, let it warm up, and then headed out. I got 2 miles down the road when the gauges started fluttering - the needles bouncing and lights flickering. The engine was fluttering as well - thought it didn't seem to be in any correlation to the gauges. I was at a stop sign when it started and when I throttled up the engine didn't respond smoothly - it seemed to really be sputtering and not running smoothly. I shut it down and tried to restart, and it restarted in the same manner. I shut it down again and let it sit for a while coming back to it later. I was able to then start it up just fine and make it almost all the way home before it started again. This got worse and now the battery is completely dead from whatever this is. I had absolutely no problem with the bike until this point, she always ran perfectly.
I don't know if this is a simple electrical short or what it could be, any help would greatly be appreciated. And any help in pointing me in the direction toward fixing it would be even better! I'm not motorcycle savvy when it comes to fixes but would love to try to this on my own.

Thank you!
