I have not worked on this bike, so I have not seen the clutch mechanism. I don't know if it is different than "standard" clutch baskets or not. Most clutch baskets do require at least some form of specialised tool to do the job correctly and without risk of damage to the basket. But most home mechanics can usually fabricate something to work just as well. I have not seen the "$100 pricy tool from Honda" that you speak of. But think about how it has to be used, and then try to fabricate something up at home.
Most time clutch springs require only removing the clutch basket cover plate. Anywhere from 4-6 bolts may be holding it on with the springs under the bolt and washer. I have never seen any other set up, but one thing I know is never say never.
