Honda CRV 97 Clinking noise?

I just bought a honda CRV 97. Whenever I turn hard left or right I hear a clinking sound. It isn't a grinding sound. It sounds like someone tied a piece of metal to the bottom of the car and went over some bumps. Someone I know talked about a bad cv joint. If it is just the cv joint, how much does the part cost? How much do mechanics charge? I think he will do it for just the cost of the part.
My buddy hung out of the door in our parking lot and listened. It sounded like it was coming from the middle of the car. It was happening when I was turning both ways. I am almost positive it wasn't the breaks or rims because I feel like he would have heard it from that spot. I also had my wife walk with the car as it was turning and it sounded like it was right in the middle of the undercarriage of the car. Thanks for the response!
Oh, and do you think it is ok for a one way trip for about a 100 miles. It is going to be highway so not a lot of turning etc. and it only makes the sound when turned all the way left or right.

the cv joint noise has a rotational frequency where you will hear the noise once ever rotation of the axle or twice every rotation. it is also directional, you will hear it from the side where the joint is bad.

start by parking the car and turn the wheels fully left. shut the engine off then go to the front of the left wheel and look at the end of the axle where it goes into the back of the wheel hub. You'll see a black rubber bellows. if the bellows is torn then there will be black grease on the outside of it and a chance that the joint has been damaged. if the bellows just looks dirty but is intact then go to the right side and look in from behind the wheel and inspect that joint. then start the engine and turn the wheels full right and look at the right front from in front of the wheel and the left front from behind the wheel. if the bellows look intact and no signs of rupture or grease then it is highly unlikely that your noise is from a CV joint.

there are two possibilities other than the cv joint that are relatively common. the first is that you have a nail or bolt or rock in the tire. I know it sounds too simple but its a strong possibility. you can put the car in gear and roll it forward, stopping every two feet or so to look at the tires for signs of a nail or rock.

the second possibility is that your wheel covers are clicking. I don't know if you have alloy wheels on the car or not; if you have stock wheel covers then the noise can be caused by the metal tangs on the back of the wheel covers. that noise is most commonly heard if you are driving next to a curb or a wall.

lastly, you may have the brake pads rattling. that too is a fairly common noise. that noise however doesn't always follow the rotational pattern.

hope that helps

You could do it for cheap.

Have someone drive your car on a left turn and look under the car to see what's happening.

its probebly your axeles, is the peace of metal that turne your weels from defrencial. no it is no recomanded to travelle with this car it can break any were and you will have to call and toycar, go fixe it first.
