honda civic makes noise when i drive in reverse?

My car makes noise when the engine is running, wither the car is in gear or not. Please try to describe the noise in question.

If it is a manual transmission it is due to the straight cut reverse gears. They make noise normally. Much cheaper to cut gears like that but too loud to do on forward gears.
