HONDA CB750 vs SUZUKI DR350?

I'm looking to get my first bike and really want a Honda CB750 ('69-'79). I am a bit worried that a $2000 cb will need relentless fixing. I don't mind the idea of working on the bike( since I want to learn) but I would rather be riding than wrenching. So should I pick up a reliable little dr350 first (I already know how to ride and have wanted a dr350 anyway for mild dual-sporting) so that I always have a road worthy bike and then get the honda? ...or do you think I would be safe just getting a cb for now? I can only afford one bike right now and would rather have a cb750 NOW. Any thoughts, advice or words from experience would be much appreciated!

I always recommend that new riders start off with a bike which is:
-not too heavy;
-not too old;
-not too maintenance-intensive.

Three strikes against the CB750.

Both doable bikes. If you are going to freeway ride then the 750 even though it will nickle and dime you a bit. But those are tough old bikes and a really clean, well taken care of one will serve you well.

Dirt is alot of fun and you will become a better, safer rider faster by riding dirt. If you don't need extended freeways speed then get the DR.

Personally I think everyone should be required to buy a really old first bike and learn all the things you learn when keeping an old bike running. But that honda if clean will be alot easier learning curve as far as maintenance than my first Triumph.
