Yes, you're correct.

Technically they don't "forget" the pets. They leave the pets with a friend in the country who then has to go out for a few days, and the pets escape before the friend comes back.

It's a beautiful movie that still makes me cry. I have never seen or read The Incredible Journey but I've loved Homeward Bound since I was a child, it's a special movie to me and I feel one of Disney's best live action efforts.

I've watched it so many times, but I still jump a bit and get nervous when Sassy falls in the water and Shadow falls into the pit

Although I did think it was pretty funny before it. Her voice actor was fantastic. "I'm so clever I amaze myself.......ah, this is more like it.....cats rule and dogs drool.....i've felt never better, never BETTER......haha, ooo......ah......yes"
