World War II is not the Holocaust.
Conscientious objection was deeply shameful in a militarised society like that of Germany in the 30s. Conscription meant legal ramifications for those who would not serve, not being shot, but imprisonment and labour, but also shame for the person's family. If you didn't want to kill people, you could be a medic, mechanic or find a 'non-combatant' role in the armed forces.
