What's your team? Just for fun, I've put together five different Canadian teams: BC, Alta, Ont, QC, and the rest of Canada (ROC). Here's the deal, pick a team that you think will win it all (and make any changes to the lineup if you think that's necessary) OR make your own team made up from players from any other country that you think could beat any or all of these teams.
It was of difficult but interesting to get this far. I tried to keep players at their natural position and put teamates together wherever possible. Both BC and Alta have amazing defences. Ontario is so stacked with centres that I had to move some around (and still left off some very good players). QC obviously has the best goaltending and a pretty amazing first line (though it drops off a bit). And the ROC team turned out to be better than I thought (both balanced and a lot of skill)
Please feel free to add your own comments.
Here's the teams:
BC (they are a little weak at forward, but just try to get through that D)
G - Carey Price / Jason Labarbera
D - E. Brewer / D Hamhuis
B Seabrook / S Weber
S Hannan / B Jackman
F - P Kariya / J Sakic / M Recchi (thought I'd put the vets together)
M Lucic / S Horcoff / C Kobasew
B Larsen / K Turris / T Brouwer
A Voros / B Morrison / D McCarty
Alta (same goes as for BC and Osgood is very underrated)
G - Chris Osgood / Alex Auld
D - M Green / D Morris
S Souray / D Phaneuf
S Niedermeyer / D Sydor
F - S Doan / D Lankow / J Iginla
R Smyth / B Little / S Upshall
K Calder / M Comrie / D Setoguchi
R Bourque / S Reinprecht / F Pisani
Ont (obviously has the most depth but not obviously going to win, though I love the first line, good D but aging)
G - Steve Mason / Manny Legace
D - R Blake / B Cambell
E Jovonovski / G DeVries
A Aucoin / C Rivet
F - R Nash / J Thornton / C Perry
M Savard / J Spezza / T Bertuzzi
M Richards / E Staal / J Cheechoo
R Brind'Amour / K Draper / K Maltby
QC (so many goalies to choose from but it had to be these two, dynamite first line too, D is strong but not as strong as the West)
G - Roberto Luongo / Martin Brodeur
D - S Robidas / M-A Bergeron
P Brisebois / F Beauchemin
K Letang / M Dandenault
F - S Gagne / V Lecavalier / M St Louis
A Tanguay / M Talbot / J.P. Dumont
G Latandresse / M Lapierre / S Bernier
A Burrows / A Vermette / G Laraques
ROC (Surprisingly this could be the team - they're good everywhere. Gotta like the all-Maritimes first line)
G - Cam Ward / Dan Ellis
D - W Redden / B Witt
D Keith / C White
L Schenn / S Hnidy
F - D Cleary / S Crosby / M Ryder
P Marleau / B Richards / R Clowe
C Kunitz / R Getzlaf / D Penner
B Morrow / J Toews / J Tootoo
The above information is based on birthplace as per Wiki. Yeah, I'm a crazed Canadian hockey fan on a Sunday afternoon with nothing better to do...
(don't forget to make a team from your own favourite hockey country if you think that that would be a better team than any of these)
And please don't take it too seriously, it's just for fun...
Don't forget to add your 'colour' comments.
I said it was an imaginary tournament, not imaginary players but nice try...
