Hmmm...Where's the love T-Mo?

Hey guys,

It's been a while since my last post...but I think I've answered just about every question about my BB thanks to you all.

Anyways, here's the deal. So I've been with T-Mo for going on two years next month. Naturally I called them this morning to see what was in store for me. Come to find out...nothing. I told them I've been with them for two years, and I was interested in signing up again. I am also interested in getting the new G1...but guess what? As a "valued customer", I get the exact same discount as anyone who walks off the street gets. My price on a G1...$179.99....Joe the Shmoe's...$179.99. Did I miss something? Two years of never missing a payment on a "Smart Access" account, and no reward? I like T-Mo...they're probably one of the best companies in America in terms of customer service. I guess everyone who is interested in signing up with them is a "valued customer", which is fine, but can I be a "valued customer who gets a special discount"?

Lemme know what you guys think!

You do get the unlimited loyal plan from them at 49.99 unlimited calling + 35.00 unlimited text and data...you get out for 85 total access unlimited. This is only for current TMO clients on the books with them for 22+ months.

Actually that is a reward, in most situations a renewal unit costs a little bit more than brand new price. They offer the deepest discounts and rebates (usually) to new customers. The price they quoted you is not a bad deal at all. On rare occasions we have seen rebates higher on renewal than on new which drop the price to a lower point than a new customer gets (most recently on the curve). From my experience, that is normal across the board for renewals with the big 4.

Yeah they guy was telling me about that, and I saw the previous thread shortly after. When I was with verizon, they did the "New Every 2" deal where you can get up to $100 off the next phone. Does T-Mo not offer new phone upgrade discounts?

I've been with them several years and at some point started getting 50 loyalty minutes a month... I am primarily UMA most of the time so never come close to using all my minutes. Rollover would be nice.......

But you're right, I kept noticing these little hints to upgrade my phone on their webpage and after I studied it it was the same price for John Doe off the street.

How is that any different than AT&T. Been a while since I was with VZW so I can't attest to their pricing for upgrades but I did read they are cutting back on the new every 2 allowance towards a new handset.

Whine Whine Whine.

Alright guys, here comes the hairy part.

This is according to the second representative I have spoken with today:

I am ineligible to get the promotion on the $49 unlimited plan with $34.99 unlimited data and text because I have been on a smart access account, and I don't get a discount. I am disliking T-mobile more and more as I go on in my quest for a regular phone line and good deal. I have been lied to since day 1...first that I could get off smart access after a year. Second, that I could get off the smart access with no string attached. Third, that this family plan was the only way to get a data plan on my smart access account. I have been overpaying for service for two damn years now...

$100 (minimum) X 23 months so far = $2300

My friend who is also with T-mobile on a regular line has been paying $70 a month for the exact same thing...on a single line with data.

Had I known that smart access was this confusing, elusive, and scandalous...I wouldn't have signed up in the first place.

You weren't lied to about being able to get off of smart access after a year of service. It does have some stipulations that should have been mentioned. Getting off smart access does require another credit check but they take into account your payment history with them. When you got smartaccess data plans were not available to single lines of service. Smartaccess no longer exists for new customers so that restriction was removed. SmartAccess has been replaced by FlexPay.

I apologize for your history with T-Mobile and the dealer that activated you. All the details should have been explained up front when your credit came back as a SmartAccess account. I do hope you have better luck with getting more info upfront prior to signing any contract in the future.

But wait, TMO is the least expensive and most customer friendly of all the carriers. At least that's what the VZW and ATT and Sprint bashes would have you believe. This just can't be!!!

Tell me what sense this makes:

Please wait while we find an agent to assist you...
You have been connected to Merwin T.
Merwin T: Pleased to meet you here online, Kyle! Thank you for contacting T-Mobile chat. My name is Merwin and I will be assisting you today. Please hold while I review your concern.
Kyle D: Ok, thank you.
Merwin T: Thank you for holding.
Kyle D: No problem
Merwin T: I understand that you would like to know if you can change your account and have the Unlimited Loyalty rate plan. Is that correct?
Kyle D: Correct.
Merwin T: Thank you for that confirmation.
Merwin T: Kyle, can I put you on hold for a moment to further check this for you?
Kyle D: Sure
Merwin T: Thank you1
Merwin T: Thank you*
Merwin T: Thank you for waiting. I regret to inform that your account is not eligible for these rate plans.
Kyle D: And the reason being is because I'm on a smart access plan...which is supposed to be a non-contract plan right?
Merwin T: I have checked your account and your contract already expired on April 2, 2009.
Merwin T: You are now eligible for a full discount handset upgrade.
Kyle D: So it is a contract plan...and it will expire on April 2, 2009. The criteria for this "Unlimited Loyalty" plan is that I have to have had a regular account for two years right?
Merwin T: T-Mobile at times will offer targeted promotions to select customers. This particular offer is available to customers who have been with T-Mobile for at least 22 months on our postpaid service. However, we do provide the best value in the industry on all of our products and services.
Kyle D: And the full discount upgrade is the same price that anyone can get who walks off the street. I have not missed a payment in two years...I had planned on signing up with you all again for another two...but at this point, there is absolutely no incentive...I will be paying the same price for a new phone, and even though I feel that I have been a loyal customer, I'll be paying more than I should.
Merwin T: Today this offer is available only to select customers. T-Mobile runs promotional offers and test offers that are available to different groups of customers, and at this time, your account does not qualify. In the future, your account may be eligible for similar type offers.
Merwin T: For some of our test offers, whether or not we extend these offers beyond the initial qualified group depends on response from our customers.
Kyle D: What is the difference between a "post-paid account" and a "smart access account"...
Kyle D: I pay my bill each month after the month of usage
Merwin T: The only difference is that on a Smartaccess account are you have a specific spending balance that you spen on a billing cycle for your account.
Kyle D: Ok...so in essence it is a post-paid account...the only factor is that the customer is allowed only a certain amount for each month to spend
Merwin T: Yes, that is correct. On a Postpaid account, you do not have a maximum spending balance.
Kyle D: So why is a smart access account eligible for an "Unlimited Loyalty" plan? I understand it is a promotional deal targeted for specific customers, but it seems like anyone who has the smart access is getting shafted
Merwin T: I totally understand your situation. However, our system offer targeted promotions to selected customers.Rest assured that this will be escalated so that appropriate action can be taken if necessary.
Merwin T: Is there anything else we can assist you with today?
Kyle D: Yes...if I want to cancel this plan that I have now...without paying an ETF...when is the best day to do it?
Kyle D: April 2, 2009?
Merwin T: Yes, that is correct.
Kyle D: I do not want to pay an ETF, or any charges for that month
Merwin T: You will not be charged an Early Termination Fee as long as you close your account after your contract expires.
Kyle D: Alright, and if I call on April 2, 2009, I will not have to pay for that month's services right?
Merwin T: Yes, that is correct.
Kyle D: Very good...I appreciate your time
Merwin T: You are very much welcome, Kyle. Is there anything else I can help you with?
Kyle D: No thank you...have a good day Merwin
Merwin T: Thank you for visiting T-Mobile chat. Have a great day!

So even though smart access is post-paid technically, it's not eligible for whatever reason

BOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Another option for you could be a corporate discount. Many companies are signed up with TMO for a 10-15% discount. If yours is not, you can do like I did and sign up www.freelancersunion.com for free. They get a 10% discount. It takes a full billing cycle to be put in place after you submit the migration form, but it could save you another 10-15 bucks per month.
