Hitchhiking in Ontario tips/advice?

I live in Kingston ON and I want to hitchhike to Ottawa, but have never hitchhiked before in my life. I am usually pretty careful and wouldnt get into a car with a really shady looking person. But has anyone every hitchhiked in Ontario, is it easy to get a ride, or does it really depend on who happens to drive by? Anything someone should do to get picked up easier?
 
Very few drivers will stop because of the fear of being robbed/assaulted/murdered by the person they pick up.
One person told me I was a "shady looking character" but I am a totally honest and respectable middle aged HR manager, stuck in a suit during the week and dressing casual on weekends.
Perhaps you should not be so picky
