Hitch bike rack or roof bike rack?

I'm thinking about changing my trunk mount bike rack. I'm afraid that its not that secure that the straps might break. I have a 2009 VW jetta and wanted an alternative without any changes done to my car when installing the bike rack like drilling. Install a hitch or a roof bike rack? Thanks
