Chris Columbus - sailed the ocean blue in 1492

uhh Spain had many other sailors, as well. Columbus (he was actually Genoan -- Italian) sailed for Spain under the commission of Isabella and Ferdinand (aka, the Catholic Monarchs).

Initial goals -- find a shorter route to India (Columbus never knew he landed in America).

Spanish Empire grew around Central America (Mexico, Florida, Cuba, Texas, California) and into South America (but not Brazil).

Relate to Native Americans? Wellllll they kinda killed them off. Entire empires destroyed in a matter of years (Incas, Aztecs, Maya were the main ones).

Remnants of culture in US -- Arizona, California, Texas, and New Mexico all have cities that have Spanish names (Los Angeles -- City of Angels), though of course much of the Spanish-speaking community today actually derives from modern immigration

-Completely condensed version of Spanish Colonialism. You'd also have to look into the economic and political systems (Look up social systems (creoles, etc.), econ. (haciendas, etc.), political (South American colonies, for example, were ruled by a series of leaders of whom the names I forget)

Just google all this. It WILL come up.

Describe the American colonies of the Spanish? When were they founded? How did they relate to the Native Americans? What were their goals? Who were their leaders? What remains of their culture in the U.S.?
