What did the League of Nations mandates do in the Middle East?

They put the French in charge of Syria.

(France got control of Greater Syria, which included modern-day Syria and Lebanon. Britain got Iraq and the Transjordan - which includes today's Jordan and the Palestinian West Bank.)
