History of English name Nicholls?

I know its an English name. My grandfather was born in London shortly before world war II. I know that there's a far more common spelling with only one L. I'm wondering if anyone has any history on the name, the coat of arms or anything at all really.
I don't know how to even begin looking for any of this information
 
There are thousands of Nicholls in the census, so if you want your family history, you will have to do the research.
Also, there is no such as a family crest.
