History of electrical outlets?

I was just wondering if there is a history to the electrical outlet, or if we have always had the standard 2 prong, one hole setup.

No the grounded prong outlet is a development since 1960. Prior to that the standard was a 2 prong system. In Europe, the standard is a different plug and outlet using 2 round pins, and the voltage is 240 volts AC.

i think all we had before was the standard 2 prong only. also some folks used what we use for light bulbs only now a days (the "edison screw base") then later the 3 prong grounded outlet came about for safety. also in modern systems, there are several variations depending on voltage & circuit load, such as dryers, stoves & RV's. google it, i am sure someone has a whole page on it!!
