Hiss from music player--ancient history or still a factor?

Hi Everyone,
Just came back to HoFo after a long while... Does the built-in music player in Symbian ^3 hiss like the E66 and E71? I'm fancying the Nokia C7, but would be very disappointed if it hisses...!

The last E model I had was the E51 and I have had the 5800, N86 and the X6 and now I have the N8. Of all those phones the N8 wins, very good sound as far as I can tell.

Depends on your headphones, I guess. The N8 probably has exactly the same hardware as the C7 in this regard so my experience with the N8 should be relevant.

I absolutely notice some very faint hiss and, worse still, a quiet periodic ticking in my Westone UM1 IEMs when I am listening on my N8, but only when the screen is on or when it's charging. It's also pretty low amplitude - will be drowned out by music but it's clearly audible in quiet or silent music segments. When the screen is off and the phone is not charging, then the sound quality is wonderful. Perhaps the best music experience any Nokia phone has ever delivered.

If you don't have sensitive in-ear monitors, then I doubt you will notice anything at all and it will sound great to you all the time. I also didn't notice anything abnormal in a pair of Grado SR80i on-ear open headphones. It's likely just really sensitive in ear monitors that are going to pick this up.

Coincidentally, I also had an E71 and it was totally unusable with the Westone headphones. The N8 is a million-fold improvement over the E71 but it's definitely not perfect.

Thanks! Hiss in the E71/E66 was a well-known pet peeve, which almost justified the hassle of carrying a 2nd device for listening to music...

I also notice the hiss and tick in my UltimateEar Triplefi 10 IEM's, it is not noticable when listening to the music only any silence between tracks. The Hiss and Tick is not audible in my turd sony workout headphones ( 20$ something or others ). I have a pair of Shure E3C's that I haven't tried in the N8 yet, I don't remember any hiss in them in my E72 ( the TripleFi 10's had a little bit ).

So it probably depends on the impedance and sensitivity of your headphones :) Overall I'm quite happy with the N8's music abilities, it's just as good as the ipod touch I have.
