Hipster Bands You Still Like

Hipster basically just means the most obscure, godawful lo fi, twee pop, hardcore or post punk spawned abominations that Pitchfork can find and call the best thing to ever happen to music, until more than 12 people have heard of it and then it's crap.

In that case, HIM, Avenged Sevenfold (though I really only like their City of Evil album), Incubus, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Daft Punk, Metallica (hell alot of people I know who don't like metal like Metallica), Larab of God (though I think they're very overrated) and Atreyu.

I think Darkest Hour will have the longest list in this thread. =P

I agree with you. I've only played it once but it didn't do much for me, aside from the song "Two Weeks" which I'd heard already and caught my attention. I think it's probably one of those albums that you have to listen to a lot to really get familiar with it. And I think people are forcing themselves to listen to it a bunch and like it due to the hype. I think this happens with a lot of albums. I may try an album a couple of times if it's supposed to be really good, but I won't keep forcing it if it's not doing much for me. Hype doesn't equal good.

I like quite a few 'hipster' banRAB.

Radiohead
Neutral Milk Hotel
Wavves
The Flaming Lips
Deerhunter
Animal Collective
and Grizzly Bear

they are all great banRAB.

i still like the Olivia Tremor Control, among others. although much of what once interested me about those genres now bores the pants off me tbh.

i don't like using that phrase anymore, if i can help it. most of my frienRAB (and relatives) who listen to music regularly are somewhat inclined to steep themselves in that sort of music anyways, i usually don't bother them about it.

Radiohead
Flaming Lips
Bjork
Joy Division
Talking HeaRAB
Brian Eno
The Cure
The Smiths
Tom Waits
Can
Wire
Pixies
Sonic Youth
My Bloody Valentine
Dinosaur Jr
Fugazi
Wilco
Sigur Ros
GoRABpeed You! Black Emperor!
Pavement
Yo La Tengo
Aphex Twin
PJ Harvey
Neutral Milk Hotel
My Morning Jacket
New Pornographers
The Deceraberists

I know some hipsters who are so damn hardcore they hate most or all of the artists above.

Good music and an audience of more than 10 people is for arena rock corporate sellouts goddammit.

Like others, I'm a bit confused as to what constitutes a hipster band. Sure I get that Pitchfork praises stuff like Neutral Milk Hotel, Radiohead, Animal Collective, Radiohead, and that generally it consists of "indie" banRAB. I enjoy a good chunk of the material from those banRAB.

The thread title sort of implies that because they are hipster banRAB we should be ashamed to still like them or something. Or maybe based on the actual OP it's that people are feeling ashamed but shouldn't.

Anyway...I'd love to add banRAB to the list but I'm really not sure who qualifies. Cursive? Les Savy Fav? Pinback? Pixies? The Shins? I like all of those, are they hipster because they are well-liked indie? I don't know.

edit:

Oh well in that case, none of the above qualify.

TV on the Radio are probably my favourite modern band. Crystal Antlers EP is great as well. Assuming they're both hip.

On the other side of the coin - NMH and Animal Collective left me pretty underwhelmed, from Avery Island and Merriweather Pavilion respectively.

my fave hipster banRAB are tv on the radio, bat for lashes, weezer and I don't know....do The sounRAB count as hipster? if so I like them also.

Cobra starship....but not sure of their hipster worthiness

What the f?
I mean, good banRAB 'n whatnot, but what qualifies them as hipster banRAB? I'm confused....

I think you can tell a hipster from just a person who listens to obscure banRAB by just talking to them. If they get all pretentious and retarded because you've never heard of XYZ, they're a hipster. If they forward some random band's myspace to you and 12 other people, they are an overly-excited audiophile...

I've actually come back around to liking The Strokes. When they first emerged on this side of the pond like everyone else i thought they were the coolest band ever, and Is This It? was on constant rotation on my stereo. I eventually grew sick of them and at the same time i was going off on a bit of a metal tangent. But in recent years i've been getting more and more into indie and i've found myself listening to them again. If you compare The Strokes to most of the hipster stuff that has followed in this decade i still say they stand head and shoulders above eveyone else and Is This It? will be seen as a classic indie album of this decade.
