My wife had a biopsy scheduled. The doctor's office neglected to confirm her appointment over the phone as promised (which they were supposed to do to verify which location my wife was supposed to go to). The doctor's office called my wife's work number this morning, and her office's receptionist answered. The person calling from the doctor's office proceeds to tell the receptionist at my wife's office all about how my wife missed the appointment and didn't show up, and how she was supposed to get a biopsy for a lump on her breast, and wanted her to relay the message to my wife that she needed to reschedule. For the rest of the day, everyone in my wife's office was wondering if she has cancer, if she's going to have to take time off work, and asking her all sorts of questions about a topic they should never have known about. She feels embarrassed and violated, and is unsure what to do. Does this violate HIPAA laws? And if so, what can we do to insure this kind of unprofessional and irresponsible treatment is rectified? Thanks.
