Hip replacement

My Mother in law had hip replacement 3 years ago & keeps telling us that she can't do much of anything but sit in her bed. She says she can never bend over again because she was told that her hip would pop out of joint.
She walks with a cane when we are around (she lives with us) but we have seen her walk fine without the cane. I know that it scares her to think that it can pop out of joint, but does anyone know what the restrictions are after 3 years?
Thank you for your time

After 3 years the restrictions are minimal. Avoid running, jumping and other high-impact activities, because they contribute to aging of the artificial joint. Avoid activities that put pressure on the joint in awkward ways.

My father has 2 replaced hips and he walks, bikes and swims quite a bit. He doesn't ice skate any more, because that involves too much twisting. Keeping the muscles around the joint strong actually reduces the risk of dislocation, didn't her physical therapist explain this?

If she is this inactive, she will need a very careful exercise program to get back into condition, preferably under medical supervision.

Thank you. we are sure that her doctor told her this, but at her age(78) she forgets. So she thinks that when they told her after her surgery & physical therapy what to do, she thinks that it's forever. So we just might have to get with her doctor.
Again thank you

For about 1 month after the surgery, you have to be super-careful. For 6-12 months, you have to be kinda careful. Given the normal activities of a 78 year old woman, the only thing that might dislocate her joints is a bad fall, and careful exercise can prevent falls.
