hiking the Appalachian in Virginia?

My fiance and I are interested in hiking on Christmas day. We live in Newport News and would like to hike the Appalachian trail. However we have never hiked before and we don't want something extremely difficult. I'm not sure where to even start as far as the location. I know that there are specific portions of the mountains that can be hiked but I'm not sure as to what part we should hike. We plan on spending the entire day at the trail. I need some suggestions for where to go to park our Jeep and start the hike and what to expect. Thanks in advance!

You know, I sort of like John H's answer here.

One time I got really confused on the Appalachian Trail. Believe it or not, I got so turned around that I actually started hiking in the WRONG DIRECTION for about 8 miles! It was a major blunder on my part and I consider myself to be decent woodsman too.

Play it safe and drive the Blue Ridge Parkway as John suggested. Pack a nice picnic lunch and enjoy a bite to eat at one of the rest stops. You can hike the AT in the spring.

Oh yeah, and another thing. It is still deer hunting season in much of Virginia. I think muzzle loader season is in during the Xmas holiday.
